Congratulations to Our 2008 Ambassador Incentive Winners!

Each year SMDEP honors up to three Ambassadors who recruit the most students that submit completed applications by the deadline and are accepted into the program. Winners will be funded to attend a medical- or dental-related professional conference. The conference must be approved by the SMDEP National Program Office.

2008 Ambassador Incentive Winners

This year, we had a three-way tie, which resulted in five winners. This year's winners are:

Edward Heath attended SMDEP at UCLA in 2006 and is now attending UC Santa Cruz where he will graduate with a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology. Last year, he was the co-founder and president of the Pre-Dental Society at UCSC. He is applying to dental schools, including the University of Michigan.

Mohammad Diab attended SMDEP at Howard University in 2007 and is now attending the University of California Santa Cruz where he is majoring in biology and minoring in Spanish. Mohammad is also the co-founder of the Pre-Dental Society at UCSC with fellow Ambassador Edward Heath. He is preparing to take the DAT and hopes to return to Howard University for dental school in 2010.

Tasneam Shagroni attended SMDEP at UT Houston in 2007. She is a rising junior at the University of Houston majoring in both biochemistry and biology with a minor in chemistry. She is interested in pursuing a career in medicine and conducting scientific research.

Nicole Ranney attended SMDEP at UT Houston in 2007, which encouraged her to go on and become an SMDEP Ambassador. She is a third-year student studying biology and chemistry at the University of San Diego. She plans to apply for dental school fall 2010.

Bilgehan Onogul attended SMDEP at Columbia University in 2007. He is a first-generation college student majoring in biochemistry at SUNY Geneseo. Bilgehan also started a Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students (MAPS) chapter at his university and in his spare time volunteers as an EMT-B.

Meet Preethi Raghu!

Preethi attended SMDEP at the University of Washington in 2008. She is a rising junior at the University of Washington with a double major in biochemistry and neurobiology.

Preethi's interest in medicine stems from her passion for the areas of neurobiology and obstetrics and gynecology. She loves volunteering at the UWMC neurology clinic, the research lab, and being an officer for the UW biology club.

Preethi says: "My experiences at SMDEP have expanded my knowledge of the field of medicine and made me more informed about the profession."
