of 3 shadowing opportunities in areas such as: general internal
medicine, family medicine, internal medicine specialties,
emergency medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and UNMC student-run
community health clinics. Pre-medicine scholars will also
have a weekly anatomy class plus small-group activities
on history taking, taking blood pressures, etc.
Pre-dentistry: Scholars will participate in a variety of
"hands-on" pre-clinical dental experiences, such
as taking impressions and making dental models, "playing
dentist" using manikins, participating in an anatomy
laboratory demonstration, and working in a dental radiology
project. Scholars will also shadow in a dental clinic, spend
time in the emergency room, and participate in a hospital
operating room experience; e.g. providing dental care under
general anesthesia in a hospital operating room.
Both medical and dental scholars will have the opportunities
to serve as Spanish-language translators at the UNMC student-run
community health clinics.
